You’ve got your best friends, you’re in an amazing country soaking in some sun on the sandy beach…can life get any better? Yep, it sure can! Costa Rica isn’t just a place with amazing surf and cool beaches, if you venture a little inland it is full of great hikes through lush green tropical forests with some of our favorite waterfall hikes.
The La Fortuna waterfall is located in central Costa Rica, not far from the Arenal volcano. There is an entrance fee (about $10 USD per person) to access the park. It is more of a touristy waterfall but it’s scenery is breathtaking and with the lifeguard on duty and public bathrooms, it is a little more family friendly for those of you with little ones.
It’s a short hike down but it is fairly steep so either bring some water shoes with grips or tread carefully in your flip flops. Stop to enjoy the views from the small observation viewing deck or continue down to the bottom where you can cool off with a little swim in the chilly stream and small rapids below. If you chose to swim you’ll either want to wear your swimsuit under your clothes or change in one of the restrooms by the entrance. For those who would rather not take the chilly plunge it is still refreshing to catch some of the mist while watching the water tumble 240 feet down to the emerald pool below.

The weather was quite warm while we were there so we wasted no time jumping in! It was definitely chilly but after awhile your body adjusts and you can get your doggy paddle on as you float around in this stunning waterfall setting. Pura Vida!!
